Obituary For Dennis Lynn Barker

Dennis Lynn Barker, age 73, passed away on January 3rd in Land O’ Lakes, Florida with loved ones by his side. Born on March 18, 1952, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Dennis lived a life marked by kindness, creativity, and an easy ability to connect with others wherever he went.

Dennis moved to Florida during the first grade, where he would grow up and eventually graduate from Southeast High School in Bradenton. A lover of the arts from an early age, he played in the high school band and sang with New Destiny Singers, who traveled around Florida following graduation. His appreciation for creativity continued into adulthood, leading him to study photography at Daytona State College—a lifelong passion that brought him great joy.

Dennis spent many years living in Bradenton, Florida, before relocating to Schenectady, New York, in the early 1980s. He later returned to Florida in 2021, settling in Valrico to be closer to his beloved sisters.

Throughout his working life, Dennis served his community as an educational bus driver, city bus driver, and eventually a motor coach driver with Wade Tours, a role well-suited to his friendly nature and love of meeting people. He retired in 2017 after years of dedicated service.

Dennis was preceded in death by his parents, Gerald and Dorothy Barker; his brother, Douglas Barker; his brother-in-law, Dick Preston; and his cherished son, Aaron Barker, his only child. He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Jessica Barker; granddaughters Maddie and Elizabeth (husband, Evan); grandsons, Ralphie and Nick; great grandchildren, Ben and Ava; sisters, Dolores (Dee) Cromwell (husband, Mike) and Dena Preston. He was previously married to Ellen Honsinger (mother to Aaron Barker) and Debbie Barker (mother to Alicia Cook (husband, Jason; and daughters, Amy and Lana)). Many nieces, nephews and cousins continue to reside in Florida, Michigan, Ohio, and New York, among other places.

Above all, Dennis will be remembered as a kind soul—someone who made a friend wherever he went. His warmth, creativity, love of music, and gentle spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 1st at 2:00 PM at Beit Tehila Congregation, located at 1705 Lithia Pinecrest Rd, Brandon, FL 33511. Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance and celebration of Dennis’s life.
