Obituary For Gertrude Schmidt
Gertrude “Geri” Schmidt
Gertrude “Geri” Schmidt, 79, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, generosity, and countless wonderful memories.
Born in Germany, Geri immigrated with her family to Canada as a young child. At the age of 17, she moved to Chicago, where she began working for AAA as a travel agent. It was in Chicago that she met the love of her life, Erich Schmidt. The two were married and shared 60 wonderful years together.
Geri and Erich built a beautiful family and raised four children: Karen Fonfara, married to Todd, and their daughter Nicole Nape; Kim Stefanisin, and her children Ethan and Emily; Kevin Schmidt, married to Angie, and their children David and Allison; and Ken Schmidt, married to Becki.
Geri absolutely loved life. She loved to dance, have a good time, and was often the life of the party. Her smile could light up a room, and her laughter and warmth made people feel at home wherever she was.
She had a remarkable gift for making everyone feel welcome. Geri made sure there was always enough for everyone and that everyone had a place at her table. Her kindness and generosity were only dwarfed by the size of her heart. She gave freely, loved deeply, and never hesitated to make someone else feel special.
Geri also loved to travel and experience the world. She embraced adventure, discovering new places, trying new foods, and, most importantly, making memories with the people she loved. Whether gathered around a table with family or enjoying a new adventure, Geri had a way of making ordinary moments extraordinary.
Above all else, Geri loved her family. She was deeply loved in return, and her presence brought joy to the lives of so many people. Her beautiful spirit, infectious smile, generous heart, and zest for life will live on in the memories of her family and friends.
Geri will be deeply missed by her husband, Erich; her children, grandchildren, extended family, friends, and all those fortunate enough to have known and loved her.
Her life was a gift, her love was a blessing, and the memories she created will remain in our hearts forever.
